Brothers Make History
In the annals of the Indian Armed Forces fighter pilots, Wing Commander Charanjit Singh and Squadron Leader Jasjit Singh have created a new chapter. This is the first time that two brothers have simultaneously been awarded the Vir Chakra for conspicuous acts of gallantry in the Dec.71 war.
The two brothers, however shrug it off as part of the game, "we come from a fighting family, we even fight among ourselves"
This is not the first time that Wg. Commander Charanjit Singh, the elder of the two brothers, has won an award for gallantry. He was decorated in 1965 for deep penetration into enemy territory. In 1971 he received the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for distinguished service. He also fought in Congo war in 1961.
In the last war, Wg. Commander Charanjit Singh made at least 20 sorties in both the eastern and the western sectors and has been awarded the Vir Chakra during several successful missions.
Squadron Leader Jasjit Singh, who has received the Vir Chakra for destroying a number of tanks, guns and bunkers, admits that he is still trying to catch up with his brother 'who has fought more wars and is more decorated.' Squadron Leader Jasjit Singh, who was involved in the western sector in the ground attack fighter squadron led a number of sorties in the thick of the battle.
His wife, who is a doctor in the Air Force, also contributed in her way by tending the wounded soldiers in the hospitals.
